How Many Days Until Easter?

The countdown above shows the exact number of days remaining until the next Easter Sunday. Unlike fixed-date holidays, Easter moves between late March and late April each year — this calculator finds the right Sunday automatically using the Computus algorithm and rolls forward to next year's Easter once the current year's Easter has passed.

Whether you're planning church services, family gatherings, school holidays, spring travel, or simply want to know when the long Easter weekend lands, a live countdown puts the date in plain sight without you having to look it up year after year.

Example: Easter 2027 falls on Sunday, March 28 the live timer ticks down hours, minutes, and seconds right up to midnight on Easter morning.

Why Track Days Until Easter?

  • Easter Sunday services – Churches plan music, programs, and seating capacity weeks in advance
  • Family gatherings – Easter Sunday traditions run from sunrise services to Easter brunch and egg hunts
  • School and work calendars – Many schools observe a spring/Easter break in the surrounding week
  • Travel planning – Easter weekend is one of the busiest travel periods in Europe and the US South
  • Lent observance – Lent begins 46 days before Easter (Ash Wednesday) — knowing the date sets your start
  • Holy Week tracking – Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday all anchor to this date
  • Spring shopping – Easter baskets, dresses, and food preparations all peak in the final week

How Easter's Date Is Calculated

Easter is the most prominent movable feast in the Christian calendar. Unlike Christmas, which is always December 25, Easter shifts because it depends on both the solar year and the lunar cycle. The rule, set by the Council of Nicaea in 325 CE, is:

Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox (March 21).

Because the lunar cycle is roughly 29.5 days and the solar year is 365.25 days, Easter can land on any of 35 different dates between March 22 and April 25. The mathematical procedure for finding Easter is called the Computus, and the version used on this page is the Anonymous Gregorian algorithm — a closed-form formula published in the 19th century and accurate for any year in the Gregorian calendar. Eastern Orthodox churches use the older Julian calendar in their Computus, which is why Orthodox Easter usually falls 1–5 weeks after Western Easter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days until Easter?

The live countdown at the top of this page shows you exactly how many days until the next Easter Sunday. The number updates daily and automatically rolls over to the following year's Easter once the current year's Easter has passed.

What date is Easter this year?

The next Easter Sunday is March 28, 2027. After that, Easter 2028 is April 16, Easter 2029 is April 1, and Easter 2030 is April 21. The exact upcoming date is always shown in the live countdown above.

Why does the date of Easter change every year?

Easter is a movable feast: it is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox (March 21). Because the lunar cycle does not align with the solar year, Easter shifts within a roughly five-week window from late March to late April.

What is the earliest and latest Easter can fall on?

Easter Sunday can fall as early as March 22 and as late as April 25. The most recent March 22 Easter was in 1818, and the next will be in 2285. The most recent April 25 Easter was in 1943, and the next will be in 2038. Most years Easter lands between late March and mid-April.

How is the date of Easter calculated?

This calculator uses the Anonymous Gregorian Computus algorithm — the standard method for finding Western (Gregorian) Easter dates. The algorithm combines the year, the 19-year Metonic cycle for the moon, and the day of the week to determine the exact Sunday. The Eastern Orthodox Easter uses the older Julian calendar and typically falls 1–5 weeks later.

When does Lent begin and end?

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which is 46 days before Easter Sunday (40 days of fasting plus six Sundays). It ends on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter. Holy Week — the final week of Lent — includes Palm Sunday (the Sunday before Easter), Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday.
